Namibia Media Trust, CITE and MISA Malawi co-hosted a regional media conference on the Future of Journalism Education in Southern Africa, with a theme of “Empowering African AI”, asking what the new technologies mean for marginalized and underprivileged communities. The hybrid conference was hosted in Windhoek, Bulawayo and Lilongwe, with each host convening sessions around the theme. Highlights included sessions on TikTok for newsrooms presented by CITE’s social media editor Lungile Ngwenya, an Audience Engagement Masterclass with Alet Law from Daily Maverick and an overview session on Challenges and Opportunities for Media in the Disruptive Digital Era presented by Dr. Francis Mdlongwa. Meet Alice, CITE’s new AI presenter 

Director Zenzele Ndebele presented CITE’s experimentation with an AI newsreader during their recent Zimbabwean election coverage. Alice has been well received by CITE’s Matabeleland audience though Prof. Mphathisi Ndlovu noted there are still issues with her pronunciation of certain African words. Alice presents CITE’s daily “The Brief” news bulletin and has her own X account which you can follow here.  Zenzele and Alice also announced they will co-host a new analysis show on CITE’s YouTube channel. As Paul McNally recommended in a recent DevelopAI newsletter, “Even before I found out about CITE’s AI progress, their newsletter Asakhe Daily guided me through the recent Zim election. They are worth following.”

Enrol in NMT’s Digital Policy EdX course

There is still time to enroll for the Media and Digital Policy in Africa online course offered by Namibia Media Trust in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch. The free course offered on the EdX platform covers freedom of expression, African digital policy, governance and regulation and there are already more than 250 registrations. Knowledge-sharing at #AfricaFlows

SAMIP publishers featured on a number of panels at the recent #AfricaFlows Civic Tech Innovation Forum and Jamfest, a four-day showcase of the hottest innovations in media and civic technology on the continent. The Mail & Guardian‘s Digital Editor Scott Peter Smith outlined their move towards a reader revenue strategy on a panel on media sustainability and redefining business models. Health-e‘s Managing Editor Bibi-Aisha Wadvalla featured on a panel discussing audience engagement and Seen‘s Nella Etkind presented a Masterclass on Augmented Reality, showing how to make interactive filters using Lens Studio.

NMT launches free Digital Policy EdX course

Namibia Media Trust has announced a FREE Media and Digital Policy in Africa online course in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch.  Registration will open at the end of the month with the course beginning on October 16th, hosted on the EdX platform. The course will require just a few hours of commitment each week for 8 weeks with modules covering cutting-edge insights into policies on Artificial Intelligence, online safety, media sustainability and more.  The updated course is based on a handbook dedicated to the memory of Jeanette Minnie, a prominent advocate for progressive communication policies in Africa and produced by a group of her friends. Radio Workshop featured on NPR

Radio Workshop‘s latest podcast ‘This Coal Life’ was featured on National Public Radio in the US, which reaches an audience of 23 million. The podcast episode, produced in conjunction with Earth Journalism Network’s Net Zero workshop attendees, explores South Africa’s energy transition and how it will impact families who have relied on coal for generations. Health-e News has appointed Ina Skosana as the publication’s new News Editor. NMT hosts #YouthQuakeNam23

The Namibia Media Trust hosted their fifth annual Youth Quake conference in Windhoek on international Youth Day, providing a platform for young people to engage in discussions on community development, personal growth and digital inclusion. This year’s theme was ‘Digital Inclusion for Youth Democratic Participation’ and aimed to equip young Namibians with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the digital landscape and participate meaningfully in the democratic process. M&G and DM to Report for the World

Mail & Guardian and Daily Maverick are among 15 new host newsrooms chosen by Report for the World as part of their expanded global cohort. The global network of 20 newsrooms, which includes five independent newsrooms reporting on their home countries in exile, benefits from cross border connections to enable reporting on the regional ramifications of local stories. Daily Maverick will cover the education beat, Mail & Guardian investigative journalism and the Sowetan will cover migration. They will receive salary and training support from Report for the World, however the newsrooms will remain editorially independent.

Seen hosts hiring Hackathon

Viral video publisher, Seen, is expanding once again! More than 100 creatives gathered in Cape Town for the first ever Seen Summit to learn storytelling skills and connect with fellow film and video enthusiasts.  Seen was hiring for 50 positions across various roles from script writers, video editors, 3D graphic designers and sales professionals – all remote.

CITE shares TikTok expertise

Director of Bulawayo-based news outlet CITE, Zenzele Ndebele was a guest on a JamLab webinar about incorporating TikTok in the newsroom. CITE recently partnered with DW Akademie to train Zimbabwean community radio stations to use TikTok for news and Ndebele outlined how they developed the storytelling techniques to finetune their short-form video content to build their GenZ audience. New agricultural publication for Lesotho

Lesotho-based weekly newspaper, Newsday, has launched a new product aimed at small farmers and the agricultural sector. Seahlolo launched as a supplement in the main paper with plans to expand into a standalone publication in time. You can see the first edition here

Daily Maverick hosts Climate Crisis Conference

Viewfinder editor, Daneel Knoetze, received second prize in the Contribution to Civil Rights category at the 2022 Fetisov Journalism Awards, at a ceremony in Dubai in April. Daneel was recognised for his reporting on police brutality and non-accountability in South Africa, through Viewfinder’s Above the Law series. The project included the launch of Viewfinder’s Police Accountability Tracker – a data dashboard containing nearly 50,000 criminal complaints against the South African Police Service in recent years. The judges praised the series as “journalism with impact at its best”. “It is a powerful report on the shadowy world of policing, in which echoes of … apartheid can be heard. Publication of this report has helped shape a new public discussion in the country [and] has led to new … regulations governing the conduct of policing,” the judges remarked.

Insights at the International Journalism Festival

Daily Maverick co-founder Styli Charalambous was amongst the media industry’s top experts exchanging ideas and insights at this years International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy. Charalambous featured on three panels discussing messaging technology, how to measure social value of journalism and what’s next for the business of news. MDIF CEO, Harlan Mandel also featured  on a panel discussing the ways philanthropic funding can bolster high-quality media as a public good. MDIF’s Chief Strategy Officer, Patrice Schneider organised and moderated a panel exploring the need for plurality of capital for independent media, sharing lessons on Puralis, a blended, multi-stakeholder investment facility managed by MDIF.

Marking World Press Freedom Day 

NMT Director and Chairperson of the Global Forum on Media Development, Zoe Titus was in New York for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day at the UN headquarters, under the theme, “Shaping a future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”.  Titus was part of a participatory fishbowl session on radical approaches to saving journalism. The panel considered systemic solutions to the business model crisis and discussed what strategies are working to help journalism survive and thrive, particularly in transitional and fragile countries.

On WPFD Viewfinder’s Daneel Knoetze led a workshop on accountability journalism at the Stellenbosch Department of Journalism’s World Press Freedom Day seminar. And Managing Editor of Newsday Lesotho, Lerato Matheka, was invited to speak at a World Press Freedom virtual event hosted by Intentional Conversations, featuring Pan-African female journalists sharing their journeys, experiences, challenges and achievements.

Radio Workshop, Volume, Food for Mzansi, Media Hack Collective and Daily Maverick were among the media organisations sharing their expertise at the PRIMED ‘Building Viable Media Businesses’ workshop held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the end of March. The two-day workshop was a platform to discuss viability work and share best practices from and for media operating in challenging environments and included local Ethiopian media and MDIF’s consultants who reflected on solutions and strategies that have produced positive results during the Protecting Independent Media for Effective Development (PRIMED) programme. Knowledge-sharing sessions included panels on monetisation strategies for newsletters and podcasts and growing audiences and engagement and the gathering concluded with study tours to local media organisations.

Global recognition for African digital innovation 

The innovative initiatives of Daily Maverick and Food for Mzansi have once again been recognised by WAN-IFRA in their annual celebration of excellence from African news publishers, the Digital Media Award Africa 2023.  Daily Maverick were announced as winners in three of the eight categories: Best in Audience Engagement for their live journalism webinars, Best Digital Subscription Initiative for Maverick Insider Marketing and Best Newsletter for Your Questions Answered. Food for Mzansi won in the Best Podcast category for their Health for Mzansi stigma-breaking podcast Sisters Talking Without Shame.

Promoting journalism skills for Namibians with Disabilities

During the month of April Namibia Media Trust will be implementing a series of media trainings catering for persons with disabilities, with the support of a SAMIP grant. The project aligns with the NMT’s access to information advocacy work and is focused on empowering Namibians living with disabilities with critical media production and literacy skills for self-advocacy. Following the skills development courses, covering journalism basics, human-centred storytelling and social media literacy and verification, the top trainees will secure editorial internships within Namibian newsrooms.

263chat founder and chief storyteller, Nigel Mugamu, sat down with Zimbabwean entrepreneur and newspaper publisher, Trevor Ncube, as a guest on ‘In Conversation with Trevor’, the digital show and podcast featuring high-profile guests who talk about issues beyond sensational headlines. The hour-long discussion covered Nigel’s journey to launch 263chat, the state of Zimbabwean media and branching out to other business ventures. You can watch it here

Radio Workshop lauded in the Continent

Cape Town-based Radio Workshop were featured in issue 119 of The Continent under the heading of “African podcasting comes of age”. Though the team did not win an “Ambie” following their nomination in the short documentary category of the Podcast Academy’s annual awards, they still consider it a victory as it is the first time an African podcast has been among the nominees. It was also a dream come true for Mary-Ann Nobele, the 23-year old who tells the story of her dreams and uncertainties in Jozi’s Alexandria township in the nominated podcast, I will not grow old here. She got to travel to Las Vegas for the awards ceremony, fulfilling the wish she articulated in the podcast. Read the full story on page 24 in this issue of the Continent.

Almost 50 people attended SAMIP’s virtual training workshop on Digital Strategy for Newsrooms on a Budget, presented by explain.co.za founder, Verashni Pillay. The two-hour workshop focused on the basics of digital news publishing and included real-life examples of how Pillay puts together a content schedule and measures its success. There was an exercise on how to create an avatar to ensure an audience-centric approach as well as practical tips on how to repurpose legacy media content for digital platforms and use free tools to create great digital content. Accountability journalism training with Viewfinder

Video journalists from Crown TV in Zambia and CITE in Zimbabwe were amongst the trainees at a series of Viewfinder accountability journalism workshops held in Johannesburg and Cape Town recently. Viewfinder founder and editor, Daneel Knoetze, outlined the tried-and-tested methodology used in their investigations which focus on exposing institutional abuses of power and accountability failures that negatively affect society’s most vulnerable. The training is an element of the wider editorial support offered as part of the Viewfinder fellowship initiative geared towards developing collaborative productions for their television broadcast partner Carte Blanche.

NMT asks the Experts

Namibia Media Trust launched the third season of their #AskTheExperts series with a focus on the dispute between the City of Windhoek and contract workers who have taken to the streets to protest their working conditions. Host Rosevitha Ndumbu speaks to City of Windhoek PRO Lydia Amutenya to shed light on the contentious issues  and possible sustainable solutions to resolving the challenges and keeping the city clean. MHC inspiration on working with data

Data Bites is the newsletter from Media Hack Collective filled with tips, tools and techniques for better communicating with data. It is aimed at those that love learning and expanding their data skills and fresh inspiration is published every two weeks. The latest edition includes a one-minute video on how to sort information in a spreadsheet and resources on how to combine data visualisations and animations with maps and news clips to create short, engaging explainers. For those looking for data, the team has compiled a useful spreadsheet of the official statistical bureaus in Africa. QTW profiled in IJNet article

IJNet profiled Quote This Woman+ in a recent article, highlighting how women sources are still underrepresented in Africa – only 22% of the people seen, heard or read about in the news are women according to a recent report, fueling stereotypical images of women and biased reporting. The article outlined the challenges and value of the QW+ database, which now includes over 600 African woman+ experts and has been used by over 1000 journalists, including top outlets. Radio Workshop hosts listening party

Academics and media experts weighed in on topics ranging from podcasting and Tiktok for newsrooms to political disinformation and digitalising newsrooms for survival. Building global media business connections 

Volume, Seen, Scrolla and Food for Mzansi were among the 22 global media startups selected to attend the Global Media Congress in Abu Dhabi, UAE in mid-November. The conference, which attracted close to 15 000 delegates, offered a platform to facilitate business connections globally and showcased products crucial to the evolving media industry. The SAMIP startups exhibited in a dedicated area where they interacted with delegates and potential investors.

The Gathering to find the solutions

This November marked the return of Daily Maverick’s flagship event, The Gathering, held at the Cape Town Convention Centre and streamed online. With the tagline of ‘Because every problem has a solution,’ the Gathering2022 was designed to inspire hope and action with the line-up of top experts in politics, business and civil society tasked with tabling solutions on how to build the South Africa we want and deserve. Topics covered energy and Eskom, the economy, pandemic preparation, organised crime, the role of civil society and political will. The audience could join the conversation by sending questions to the moderators and live chat with fellow attendees on the conference platform. As with all Daily Maverick content the virtual conference was available to all for free.

Women Voices of 2022 recognises women+ finding the spotlight

A queer consciousness blogger, a disabled writer/sex worker advocate and a PhD candidate working to disrupt faith-based narratives around gender and sexualities: these are just three of the experts recognised by Quote This Woman+ in its inaugural Voices of the Year awards. Research indicates that women’s voices are only a quarter of those featured in the South African media so the awards set out to recognise women+ who go the extra mile to ensure that the most marginalised voices are given a chance to be amplified through media platforms. Training masterclasses for Africa’s top investigative journalists

SAMIP participants shared their expertise and showcased some of their groundbreaking work at this year’s African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC), held on the Wits University campus in early November, and several shared their skills in training masterclasses. Paul McNally from Volume/Alibi Investigations outlined how to produce an investigative podcast and Daneel Knoetze from Viewfinder presented on how to analyse and interpret data and generate impact using their Police Accountability Tracker as a case study. The Media Hack Collective team presented masterclasses at the IJ pre-conference hosted by Norwegian non-profit SKUP and offered four hands-on sessions as part of the conference’s training stream, including how to use technology to do better journalism, how to make custom maps for journalists who can’t code and a gentle introduction to using data in your reporting. They also put together this great overview on the value of digging data, featuring comments from some of the key AIJC speakers.
