Every year, a specific theme is chosen for World Press Day, and this year’s theme is “Journalism under digital siege”. This year’s theme not only highlights the ways that endanger journalism but also the consequences of public trust in digital communications. In this edition of our updates, we bring you what our participants got up to in celebration and commemoration of #WPFD2022.

 

Namibia Media Trust releases a special edition podcast & press statement to mark WPFD

Namibia Media Trust released a press statement and a special edition of the #iSPEAK podcast as part of this year’s World Press Freedom Day celebrations. iSPEAK host Gwen Lister and guests Zenzele Ndebele, founding director of CITE, investigative journalist at The Namibian newspaper Immanuel Shinovene, Frederico Links, Editor of Fact-check Namibia and Programme Coordinator at Sister Namibia Ndapwa Alweendo highlighted how recent developments in technological monitoring and surveillance impact journalism and freedom of expression. 

Director of Namibia Media Trust, Zoe Titus, delivered a welcoming speech sharing her views in line with the WPFD2022 theme during the podcast stating that “Journalists are at the receiving end of a great deal of criticism, threats, and abuses and are rarely celebrated for the critical work that they do in the service of our democracy.” Click here to listen to the podcast.

Namibia Media Trust’s Zoe Titus also released a World Press Freedom Day edition of iSpeakAfrica newsletter and spoke on NBC about the press freedom situation in Namibia.

 

 

Newsday  receives an award and is featured at MISA-Lesotho for WPFD

Lesotho news outlet, Newsday Media has received an award from MISA-Lesotho at the closing ceremony of the organisation’s World Press Freedom Day events. The newspaper, particularly its digital version, was recognised with a certificate of recognition of excellence in promoting free expression and access to information. 

Also part of World Press Freedom Day celebrations, Newsday Media Managing Editor, Lerato Matheka was a discussion panelist at the MISA-Lesotho WPFD commemoration event recently held in Maseru.

 

Hashtag Our Stories wants to know what Press Freedom means to you

Storytelling agency Hashtag Our Stories on World Press Freedom Day asked social media followers “What does Press Freedom mean to you?”, providing a platform for people to express themselves on what their views on Press Freedom are in the digital era. Co-founder, Yusuf Omar, an award-winning journalist with a passion for helping people tell their stories had this to answer – “Journalism is not a crime, and journalists shouldn’t fear for their lives!”.

As part of World Press Freedom Day, Media Development Investment Fund published an article about the different types of digital attacks being used to suppress Press Freedom and silence independent media around the world. The article unpacks the daunting range of challenges faced by Media Freedom, from censorship and jailings to physical assaults and murder.

Media Hack Collective to host in-person training and publishes report on Covid-19 in SA

Data journalism start-up Media Hack Collective has run a coronavirus dashboard for more than two years that has been visited by millions of people. The organisation will be hosting an in-person workshop on 14 May in Johannesburg where they will be sharing lessons learned from visualising the pandemic and will provide training on how to create your own charts and maps using free tools. The course is suitable for beginner to intermediate people, read more here.

Media Hack’s independent publication, The Outlier has published a report on two years of Covid-19 in South Africa. On 5 March 2020 South Africa recorded its first SARS-CoV-2 case and two years later more than 100 000 deaths were attributed to the coronavirus in the country. In the report, the death toll is said to likely be three times higher, click here to read more detailed coronavirus data in South Africa collected by Media Hack over the past two years. 

 

Explain on power outages in SA and keeping the KZN relief funds corruption-free

Media start-up, explain.co.za published their latest weekly Wrap, themed dark days dogging South Africans. In the latest edition, the publication covers the ongoing power outages and the aftermath of floods in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Included in this edition, are some tips for those looking to invest in solar energy due to the electricity crisis in the country.

 

 

Health-e on how the KZN healthcare service took a battering due to floods

Health news agency Health-e has published an article on how the devastating Kwazulu-Natal floods have left the healthcare system and infrastructure ravaged, including the roads. Damaged roads have prevented healthcare professionals and patients from accessing facilities, with hundreds of people in need of emergency services left stranded. Exposure to natural disasters such as flooding has a considerable mental health impact, and it is expected for some individuals to experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety due to the floods.

 

 

Hashtag Our Stories team to jet off to the Mojo Festival in London

Storytelling agency, Hashtag Our Stories will be jetting off to the Mojo Festival set to take place on 11 and 12 May in London Olympia. The Mojo Fest is the world’s longest-running mobile content creators’ festival and Hashtag is flying in its entire Europe team to attend.

Included on the list are three Momentum Proteas stars featuring in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. All eyes were fixated on the Momentum Proteas’ World Cup journey in New Zealand, which saw the South Africans bow out in the semi-final round.

 

Hashtag celebrates world water day at Expo2020

Storytelling agency,  Hashtag Our Stories joined in on the celebration of World Water Day at the Expo Dubai, which is an annual global event that invites the world to celebrate the importance of water, exploring its various dimensions. Co-founder, Yusuf Omar introduced AR lenses on Snapchat that allow attendees to tell water conservation stories with their phones. 

 

‎Radio Workshop: Young, Unvaccinated, and African podcast

Children’s Radio foundation’s podcast, Radio Workshop has published a podcast episode on vaccine hesitancy among youth in Africa. The podcast features stories of a 20-something mother from Joburg, student protesters from the Durban University of Technology, young people who spend big bucks on fraudulent vaccine cards in Zimbabwe, and a mobile vaccine center in Nigeria. 

 

263Chat introduces new podcast 

Online news platform, 263Chat has recently launched a new podcast – The Mid-Week Show.  The podcast unpacks different conversations and is broadcast on Twitter Spaces, Instagram, and Youtube. In the latest episode, the show discusses political corrections on pop culture and cancel culture in the entertainment industry.

Quote This Women+ International Women’s Day Campaign and fundraiser 

In light of International Women’s Month and Quote This Woman’s third birthday, the feminist non-profit organisation has launched a fundraiser with the aim to increase their current database from 600 to 900 female experts. Honoring this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Quote This Woman is dedicated to amplifying 300 more African female voices and narratives to #BreakTheBias in the media. The fundraiser is live until 15 April 2022, click here to make a donation pledge to support this initiative.

 

 

Food for Mzansi kicks-off AgriCareers roadshow

Agri-news publisher, Food for Mzansi has launched a new academic platform, AgriCareers. AgriCareers aims to present learners with information on what the requirements are to work towards a career in agriculture through hosting career expos and roadshows where learners get to engage with professionals in the sector. The platform is also dedicated to educating learners on the diverse job roles within the agricultural sector.

AgriCareers successfully hosted its very first roadshow on 16 March 2022 in Kroonstad, with nearly 500 state learners in attendance. Read more here.

 

 

Viewfinder produces latest Carte Blanche exposé

Investigative journalism start-up, Viewfinder is hard at work exposing police brutality and non-accountability, prompting the police code of silence to crack. In the latest Viewfinder produced segment for Carte Blanche, presenter Derek Watts speaks to an officer about how torture and cover-up has become routine at their workplace. This whistleblower was moved to speak out by an exposé on the alleged torture and murder of 36-year-old Adam Isaacs by police in January 2020.

 

 

The Outlier Blackout – Loadshedding Quiz

In the midst of South Africa’s ongoing energy crisis, data journalism organisation, Media Hack publisher of The Outlier introduced a Blackout –  A loadshedding quiz. The quiz is compiled from random facts about loadshedding using data from Eskom Se Pushon loadshedding from 2015 to 2021. Click here to take the quiz and see how many you can answer correctly.

 

 

Health-e reports on HIV-TB mortality rates

Health news service, Health-e has published an article on HIV-TB mortality rates. The published piece discusses how despite integrated interventions, the two chronic illnesses remain the leading cause of death in South Africa. Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), remains worried as South Africa’s HIV-TB mortality rates continue to soar.

Zoe has joined the member-based community of like-minded women that provides skills and support to women experts. Through the women experts on the database, Quote This Women+ aims to contribute to gender transformation of the media landscape through the use of female voices and narratives.

 

Hashtag Our Stories at Active Minds National Conference 2022

Co-founder of storytelling agency, Hashtag Our Stories Yusuf Omar featured as a keynote speaker at the Active Minds National Conference 2022. The multi-award-winning journalist serves as a coach for SnapChat’s Club Unity and in collaboration with Active Minds and Snapchat, Yusuf and the other members of Club Unity recently launched Here For You. Here For You is an in-app mental health resource hub that aims to address ways Snapchatters can start tough conversations with friends.

gsport #GAL2022 has officially kicked off for the year and is in its second month. The women’s sport news publisher has announced the second newsmakers intake that will form part of the build-up to its fourth Annual List event in December 2022. The Citizen Bulletin #EJPZim Content Creators’ webinar

Zimbabwean hyperlocal digital news outlet, The Citizen Bulletin recently launched an inaugural entrepreneurial journalism training and mentorship program with support from the US Mission in Zimbabwe. The program seeks to empower journalists and media content creators with the needed skills to develop sustainable niche products.

 As part of the program, an online virtual event is held monthly. Join the next #EJPZim Content Creators’ webinar on 25 February from 14:00 pm to 15:00 pm for a public session on ‘Strategies for Building Successful Journalism Ventures: Lessons from Mundos Paralelos, Puerto Rico’.

 

Namibia Media Trust at the Media Freedom Conference & launches three months journalism fellowship.

Non-profit organisation, Namibia Media Trust also launched an entrepreneurial journalism initiative: the three-month NXT Journalism Fellowship kicked this year with six fellows who receive support and start-up capital to get their projects off the ground.

Director of Namibia Media Trust, Zoe Titus also featured at the Global Media Freedom Conference hosted by the Estonian Mission of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn. Zoe discussed the non-profit model of the Namibian newspaper and the effective use of donor funding for public interest media. The media freedom advocate was also selected as a panelist addressing the challenges faced in media development and journalism

 

Igunundu launches Bayede TV and iZingane ZelaboHlanga publication

Digital media and content publisher, Igunundu has recently introduced two new innovative products. The start-up has launched a digital news channel, Bayede Thelevishini on Youtube that explores South African politics through interviews. As part of cultivating new readership, Igunundu has also launched a four-page supplement iZingane ZelaboHlanga which aims to educate children between the ages of 7 and 15 about cultural heritage and a culture of reading.

Quote This Woman+ receives OSF grant and features on Fairlady Magazine

Feminist non-profit organisation, Quote This Woman+ has received grant funding from global philanthropic organisation, the Open Society Foundation. The R700 000 grant will assist Quote This Woman+ in the fight against gender discrimination and the misrepresentation of women voices in the media.

“This funding has arrived not a moment too soon as we have exhausted our previous funder’s grant cycle – from the South African Media Innovative Program (SAMIP). “We are incredibly grateful to the entire SAMIP team for our journey with them; we know that the level of support we have had from SAMIP has been extraordinary,” says QW+ Director. Kathy Magrobi.

 

 

Another highlight for Quote This Woman+, Kathy Magrobi is featured in the January/February issue of feminist magazine, Fairlady. The magazine feature shines the spotlight on the organisation’s mission to contribute to gender transformation. Quote This Woman+ has a database of over 500 female experts and is dedicated to fighting against the misrepresentation of women experts in the media.

 

 

Media Hack Collective celebrates second birthday

Data journalism start-up, Media Hack Collective is two years old. The organisation celebrated with moving into new offices and welcoming a new addition into their team. Media Hack joined SAMIP in December 2019 with the focus to specialise in data visualisations, data-driven storytelling, and data training for newsrooms. The start-up has since reported positive growth and recently launched an independent publication, The Outlier.

 

 

gsport4girls announces first #GAL2022 newsmakers intake

gsport #GALL2022 has officially kicked off with unveiling the first monthly newsmakers intake for the year. This first set of monthly newsmakers forms part of the build-up to gsport’s fourth Annual List event in December 2022. The gsport Annual List (#GAL) was launched in 2019 and is South Africa’s only newsmakers event that is dedicated to women’s sport.

 

 

The Daily Vox advocates for dropout prevention in schools

Youth-centered news portal, The Daily Vox will be hosting a Twitter Space on how to prevent learners from dropping out of school. The virtual discussion is set to take place on 9 February at 18:00 with speakers geared to share strategies on how to put a stop to gender-responsive dropouts.

 

 

#SMWX catches up with Eusebius McKaiser

Digital current affairs channel, #SMWX recently hosted South African political analyst and journalist Eusebius McKaiser on a debate about the SA Constitution. The debate unpacked the constitution’s merits, weaknesses, future trajectories and reflected on the role of Chief Justice in changing times.

Media start-up, explain.co.za published their latest weekly Wrap with a summary of part two of the state capture commission report released by Raymond Zondo. Covered in The Wrap is the news of singer Rihanna’s pregnancy that broke the internet on socials and to wrap up, a quick explainer is squeezed in on why the petrol price in SA is so high.

gsport announces Top 10 Newsmakers of 2021

Women sports outlet, gsport announced the Top 10 Newsmakers of 2021 in style at a lavish event hosted at the Radission RED Hotel. The #GAL2021 Newsmakers list is compiled in-house and is informed by leading events in the gsport newsroom throughout the year. The guest list of the third edition of South Africa’s only women’s sport newsmakers event was kept tight due to Covid-19. In attendance were only newsmakers, selected media, and gsport partners.

 

 

Mail & Guardian and gsport partnership elevates women in sport

Mail & Guardian partnered with gsport about a year ago to increase mainstream media coverage of women’s sport on the continent. The fourth and final supplement for 2021 has recently been published celebrating 10 gsport Newsmakers of the year. The partnership has been successful at shining the spotlight on efforts to close the visibility gap and ensure increased coverage.

 

Volume at the Africa Podfest

Africa Podfest recently hosted Discovery Tour: The Road to Africa Podcast Day 2022. South Africa is the third stop of the virtual Discovery Tour of four African podcast hubs. Podcasting start-up, Volume partnered with Africa Podfest to share insights and host a training session. Co-founder, Paul McNally hosted a training session on podcast production and distribution and shared tips on monetising podcasts.

Children’s Radio Foundation podcasting platform, The Radio Workshop released a podcast on the violent unrest that erupted in July 2021. On this latest podcast titled, Things Fall Apart: 8 Days of Unrest in South Africa, youth reporters speak with young people and communities across the country. The conversations attempt to help reckon with the country’s most violent period of unrest since democracy.

 

 

The Citizen Bulletin hosts Zimbabwe Media Policy Reform Symposium

The Citizen Bulletin, via its parent company, Zimbabwe Center for Media and Information Literacy (ZCMIL) recently hosted a two-day symposium in Harare on Zimbabwe’s Media Reform Agenda. The conference, attended by several ministers and top officials, interrogated the progress made so far by the government to align media laws to the Constitution in a bid to establish a free press environment in the country, currently ranked 130 out of 180 in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index.

 

Namibia Media Trust hosts a conference on Journalism Education in Southern Africa

Namibia Media Trust co-hosted the third edition of their annual conference on the Future of Journalism Education in Southern Africa. The virtual conference provided a platform for media managers, journalists, media experts and journalism trainers to exchange and develop ideas. Food for Mzansi hosts Pan-African Summit and launches sister publication

Agri-news publisher Food for Mzansi hosted the first Pan-African Summit on Youth in Sustainable Agriculture in celebration of their third birthday. The Africa-wide virtual event featured attendees from at least 15 different countries. Farmers, agripreneurs, and key role players from across the continent discussed emerging developments and highlighted best practices, technologies, partnerships, and real-life experiences.

 

 

African farmers and agripreneurs, rise up! Food For Mzansi lifted the veil on FoodForAfrika.com, a continent-wide agriculture publication celebrating sustainable agriculture. Viewfinder launches Police Accountability Tracker dashboard and bags Fetisov Award nomination

Investigative journalism start-up, Viewfinder is excited to launch its Police Accountability Tracker dashboard. Viewfinder’s Police Accountability Tracker is an interface to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) database. The dashboard is also embedded on fellow SAMIP participant, Daily Maverick’s website.

 

 

Viewfinder is nominated for the international Fetisov Journalism Awards 2021 under the Contribution to Civil Rights category. The winning project will be announced on the FJA website on 22 February 2022.

 

 

SAMIP in collaboration with Volume launches Media Diaries: The New Normal 

SAMIP in collaboration with award-winning podcasting start-up Volume launched Media Diaries: The New Normal at the beginning of November. Produced and hosted by Amina Deka Asma, the podcast covers how newsrooms have been innovating and adapting to what is now known as “the new normal” due to the pandemic. In the latest episode, Volume speaks to financial literacy publication, Zonotho.

The sessions were aimed at educating citizens on election matters and provided a platform for political parties to discuss manifestos. SAMIP participants publishes a local government election newsletters

 

The Daily Vox and  Mail & Guardian launched special edition newsletters covering local government elections. The newsletters offered election updates, outcomes and Q & A segments from both political parties and voters. To increase the reach, Mail and Guardian lifted its paywall to give access to all their audiences.

MHC publication The Outlier reports on local government election voter interest

 

Data journalism organisation Media Hack Collective, publisher of The Outlier used data to report on election predictions and dug into voter registration. Throughout the election period, The Outlier published various data-related articles and information that can be accessed on their website.

#SMWX’s Sizwe joins Newzroom Afrika team for the elections live coverage

 

SizweMpofu-Walsh, founder of youth-centred digital current affairs channel #SMWX, was featured live on Newzroom Afrika to cover the elections from the IEC National Results Operation Centre. As a guest, Sizwe analysed and discussed voter interest, voter turnout, and to predicted election outcomes.
